What sort of education do Birmingham’s School Pupils want to see in 2020?

This blog has been set up to report on Birmingham’s first Youth Panel Conference on Friday 27 July 2008.  The conference has been entirely curated and organised by a group of 12 young people drawn from two Birmingham schools, who together make up the Fierce! Youth Panel.

The Panel commissioned and briefed the internationally renowned Birmingham theatre company Stan’s Cafe to co-plan and co-deliver a series of workshops for the Conference, based around the theme of ‘What do we want our education to be like in the year 2020?’. Members of the Youth Panel work as equals with their adult mentors. With their usual brand of creative thinking, Stan’s Cafe will be encouraging delegates to debate such questions as ‘How green should our schools be?’, ‘What tools will be used in the future to make learning more enjoyable’ and ‘How should schools be designed to maximise learning?’.

The Fierce! Youth Panel, drawn from Handsworth Grammar School and Queensbridge Visual and Performing Arts College have been working in collaboration with Fierce! and Bright Space to organise the Conference, which is aimed at young people, head teachers, teachers, arts educators, policy makers, artists and representatives from the creative and cultural sector. The Youth Panel has been involved with organising the Conference since January 2008, and have attended other events organised by young people around the country to draw comparison.
